Leconfield Wines at Coonawarra
Richard Hamilton Wines at McLaren Vale.
Inspired by his viticulturist father Burton, Richard Hamilton, fifth generation wine grower, established his own winery and vineyards at McLaren Vale in 1972.
Since then, Richard and his wife Jette have built up their vineyard holdings, some of which are in excess of 100 years old. These holdings are comprised not only of Burton’s McLaren Vale vineyards but also his Uncle Sydney’s winery and vineyards in Coonawarra.
As well as maintaining his wine and viticulture interests, Dr Richard Hamilton is a leading surgeon in the field of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery based in Adelaide, South Australia. Jette Hamilton was born in the Danish village of Odense and first met Dr Hamilton in January 1979 in Scandinavia. One year later they were married and in February 1980 Jette moved to Australia
Jette’s Danish heritage is strongly reflected in a number of elements of the McLaren Vale Cellar Door, most obviously the gabled roof. The four peaked roof is modelled on a fishery storehouse, located in the northern village of Skagen, the storehouse is still there today. Other Danish elements include the large windows that allow plenty of natural light into cellar door, creating a spacious airy atmosphere. The use of lighter timber, oak and pine are also based on Danish design.
Jette, Richard and their two children, Annasofia and Thomas travel to Denmark every second year to visit their family.
Richard and Jette are proud of their family’s winemaking and viticulture heritage and are passionate about working with their winemaking team to ensure the company continues to produce premium quality wines that are in demand around the world.
