BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Coonawarra vineyards of Leconfield are planted on Terra Rossa soils rich in the clay content that is ideal for growing premium Merlot. This is an estate grown wine sourced from vines planted from 1982 to 1999. Leconfield has developed a reputation of being amongst the best producers of Merlot in Australia. We are continually evolving our style to give length with finesse in this limited release wine. The vineyard was founded in 1974 by pioneering oenologist Sydney Hamilton who at 76 years of age had the dream to produce the classic Australian red wine.  Time has validated his choice of Coonawarra as a fantastic place to do just that.  Today the estate is planted predominantly to Cabernet Sauvignon with smaller patches of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Shiraz and complemented with the white varieties of Riesling and Chardonnay.
 
WINEMAKING NOTES We are fortunate to have mature Merlot vines planted from 1982 to 1999, a significant proportion of which is dry grown. Supporting this fruit is a block of newer clones (R8 and Q45-14) which produce small berry size producing intense colour and a deeper flavour profile. Fermentation on skins was for 7-12 days after which the wines were pressed and allowed to settle before maturation in 100% French Oak with two rackings over 14 months to soften the tannin structure. The wine was blended in April 2019 and prepared for bottling in May.
 
VINTAGE CONDITIONS 2018 provided the ideal conditions to produce outstanding quality white and reds wines in Coonawarra. Above average rainfall in winter and spring ensured the vines had a good start to the growing season. Leconfield's vines were unaffected by a frost event on 4th November 2017 while warmer conditions in late November and December allowed for quick, uniform flowering providing good fruit set and aided even ripening. From December to mid-April, temperatures were slightly above average and rainfall about 50% below inducing earlier veraison. Conditions provided ideal ripening with whites being picked in third to fourth week of February and reds from the third week of March to mid April. With moderate yields and  even, gradual ripening, excellent quality has been ensured.
