$30.00

COLOUR Medium density, bright red

BOUQUET Fragrant black cherry and raspberry fruits with a very subtle influence of cedar through maturation in seasoned oak.

FOOD SUGGESTIONS The approachability of this wine lends itself as an aperitif and will match a wide range of cuisine. Excellent with duck, pasta and the soft acidity lends itself to Asian styles with a little spice and fragrance.

CELLARING POTENTIAL The wine will age well over 6-8 years but is particularly appealing while youth and vibrant.

WINEMAKING NOTES Grenache requires patience to allow for grape flavours to fully ripen. We select the lower yielding vines with evenly ripened fruit at harvest as our primary means of ensuring the quality of this wine. The fruit was destemmed to eliminate any stalks which may have imparted green tannins and fermented with partial whole berry in an oak vat and a small fermenter. Emphasis was placed on building tannins to create roundness while vibrant fruit was ensured through keeping the temperature at around 22 deg C for the core of the fermentation. Following malo-lactic fermentation, the wine was racked to a 4 year old vat and 5-6 year old hogsheads where it was matured for seven months with two rackings. Filtration and bottling occurred December 2018

BACKGROUND INFORMATION The wine is named in honour of Richard Hamilton’s father, Burton Hamilton (1904 to 1994) who was a viticulturist in South Australia for his entire working life. The site, selection, and resultant wine are a true expression of McLaren Vale terroir and fitting tribute to Burton’s pioneering spirit.

OAK TREATMENT 8 months in 4 year old vat and 5-6 year old hogsheads

VINEYARD NOTES 2018 is shaping up to be an outstanding year in McLaren Vale. Above average rainfall in July and August set up the vines for a good growing season. October and November were relatively dry but relieved by good rains in December. Temperatures in most months from October to the end of harvest were slightly warmer than average with both maximum and minimum. Veraison was a little late, but proceeded rapidly after some hot January days. Ripening conditions during February and March were ideal with dry conditions and an absence of extreme temperatures provided rich fruit flavours and mature tannins.

Vegan friendly.
