What’s so special about New Orleans?

You need only a passing interest in New Orleans to be aware of its proud, carefree approach to life. The motto of New Orleans is “laissez les bon temps rouler”, a crude English to Cajun-French translation of “let the good times roll,” and this slogan isn’t something just slapped on the end of tourism campaigns, either. It’s something you can see and feel, it’s the spirit of New Orleans. The Big Easy is also renowned for its celebrations, of pretty much anything. It’s a place which epitomises the freewheeling spirit born out of a whole bunch of cultures that have come together over the centuries, cultivating a unique and independent way of life, a city formed by the superstitions, traditions and history of a multicultural melting pot.

New Orleans was a special place for music at the turn of the last century a major port city, home to many different types of people including African-American, Indian, French, Cuban, Spanish, Cajun, Creoles, Latino, German, Irish, Italians and Jews - each of whom had their own style of music. Including, Opera, military marching band, folk music, blues, gospel, ragtime, voodoo, echoes of traditional African drumming and of all the dance styles that went with this music could be heard and seen throughout the city. When all of those kinds of music blended into one, jazz was born. In the 60s and 70s New Orleans also became a prominent centre of funk, and was home to some of the earliest and now legendary swamp-funk bands. “Funk” has several different meanings in American popular discourse, but since the 1970s it has largely connoted a heavily syncopated, groove-centered style of African-American music.

The Food of New Orleans also reflects the multicultural mele of the people that make up the city. It is perhaps the most distinctively recognized regional cuisine in the United States. New Orleans’ food culture is one of the most diverse in the US and reflects Cajun, Creole French, Spanish and soul food influences. It’s food that’s perfect for a celebration.

More about the 2 sensational bands that will be performing on the day.

New Orleans, where every occasion is a reason to groove. The New Orleans Funk Express have dedicated themselves to presenting the music and rhythms of the Crescent City. Known for their outstanding groove-laden performances and leaning on the funk tradition of playing hypnotic grooves that WILL get you bopping, these eight outstanding musicians are renowned for their renditions of New Orleans funk. In this show, they present N’awlins classics from legendary artists including The Neville Brothers, The Meters, Doctor John, Professor Longhair, Allan Touissaint, Rebirth Brass Band, and much more. A live music feast guaranteed to please!

Atlantic Street Band plays infectious and irresistible New Orleans Dixieland jazz, including timeless music from founding fathers of jazz including buddy bolden, king oliver, jelly roll Morton and louis Armstrong. Formed in 2007, the ‘sound’ of the band features trumpet, trombone, clarinet, banjo, sousa-phone, and washboard. And when they perform, they never fail to get feet tapping and hands clapping.

We are incredibly excited to be a part of this ground-breaking show – SKY SONG!

With thanks to the team at The Fringe and Gluttony, by moving the show to McLaren Vale the atmosphere will be taken to another level. The gates will open at 6 pm with food trucks and our wine bar for you to enjoy as you soak up the view of our vineyards with the Willunga Hills as our backdrop. Then, as the sun sets, get ready for the show to begin…

Over 7 incredible nights, SKY SONG is a collection of First Nations stories brought to life with a never seen before display of lights from hundreds of dronesflying in majestic formation above a colossal 75m wide screen projection, dramatic haze and lighting, hyperreal sound, poetry, iconic anthems and newly commissioned music to tell the stories of First Nations artists on the ground and in the night sky.

Narrated by singer, songwriter and tireless campaigner for the rights of Indigenous Australians, the iconic Archie Roach, SKY SONG will unfold over five chapters that focus on topics such as belonging and connection to country, ancestry, the passing on of knowledge, creation stories, land rights, the devastation of the stolen generations and the hopefulness of reconciliation.

SKY SONG features a soundtrack of the work of many of the country’s most acclaimed First Nations artists including cultural icons Archie Roach and Kev Carmody plus celebrated musicians Electric Fields, Iwiri Choir and Nancy Bates; storytellers Major ‘Moogy’ Sumner and Jack Buckskin; poet Ali Cobby Eckermann; dance group Dusty Feet Mob and visual art by Electric Fields’ Zaachariaha Fielding.
