Our grapes for this wine come from two vineyards just to the south of McLaren Vale: Farm Block, planted in 1985 and Hut Block, planted in 1998. We take the approach of making a structured Merlot with good depth and a fine background of tannin while retaining the opulence typical of the variety.

All the components of this wine have come from our Farm Block, on the southern edge of the McLaren Vale township. The individual varieties were fermented separately and matured in seasoned oak to retain fruit dominance. The style of the wine is based on the mouth filling texture provided by Grenache and structure and density characteristic of Shiraz and Mourvèdre.

Named after the picker’s hut at the front of the property, our Hut Block vineyards are planted on sand and black clay loam soils over a substructure of clay. We think that the intensity of our Cabernet Sauvignon can be attributed to these soils, while the mild maritime climate of McLaren Vale, in which cool evening and night breezes from the gully winds moderate the day time temperatures, suits this variety.

Planted in 1892, the vineyard is among the oldest in the region, indeed in Australia. Situated at the back of the Old Hut Block, the gnarly Shiraz vines are grown in grey loams over old river clay with underlying limestone. The combination of site and old vines produces a lovely elegant yet powerful style of wine. The vineyard is hand pruned and harvested. The climate is moderate and tempered by the cool sea breezes from the Gulf of St. Vincent some 8 kilometres away
